NBA x NFL Mashup Helmet Designs

As an avid sports fan who doesn’t love a good cross brand of your favorite teams.

This side project all started with the purchase of a sports template called Touchdown Football Uniform Mockup from sportstemplate.net. I originally wanted to use this awesome football mockup for my portfolio piece of El Paso Outlaws football concept. I think it turned out very well and pushed the case study to the next level. Then I had the idea to redesign the new LA Chargers helmets which led to redesigning my hometown college of UTEP football. I posted the designs on my Instagram, @crmfresh88, and got plenty of good feedback.

Then it struck a light bulb reflecting back on a blog post I did for NBA Logo Redesigns & App Icon Design that it would be cool to implement these to the helmet template. From there I hit the ground running and creating some new digital media for my Instagram. This is a project that allows me to keep the designs consistent yet unique to each team brand. Once I find a good niche I stick with it and find different ways to stand each design apart without steering away from the overall consistency of the project.

I love the idea of crossing sports brands specifically NBA branding as NFL equipment and finding ways to merge the two worlds. I was easily influenced by the Nike’s NFL Color Rush Series of jerseys for various NFL teams & wanted to head that art direction. I love bright colors with the accent of contrast with dark colors. So, it was fun studying each team brand and creating a different color palette for each design. The helmet design in general provoked me to be more creative with a different surface area as compared to a basketball jersey and shorts. Overall, it was a great project to work on combining digital media & social media interaction for me. Plus, it has gotten me a little bit more exposure in the sports business which is where I would like to eventually lead my career.
